Mayne Island, BC Canada

always find it's hardest to get the ball rolling, and I suppose I have that nagging fear that whatever I write is going to bore you senseless, but first blogs being first blogs, I should describe where I am at the moment. I just returned from studying at the University of Wollongong in Australia, and now I'm temporarily living on Mayne Island before flying out to South korea for an exchange. The Island is absolutely beautiful...however, beauty comes at a price....storms knock out power, the internet is temperamental, and catching a movie means taking a 1 1/2 hour ferry ride to Vancouver:

The view more than makes up for the time however. At the moment it's completely dark outside, but my house fronts the water and you can hear the waves rolling against the shore. Tomorrow I might rub myself down with lard and go swim in the frigid Canadian waters....on second thought perhaps the reef sharks would love nothing more than a grease covered human frolicking around in deep water. Before long it'll be the polar bear swim, for all of those who are from the Northen Hemisphere...no explanation needed. I suppose a 30 second plunge per day couldn't hurt. However, up here on Mayne Island, the water is a far cry from the beaches of Australia's South-east coast:

Well, despite all of Australia's beautiful white sand and spectacular surf, I've missed Canada- the northern pines, the mountains, the forests!!! And yes, I gave up an auzzie summer for a winter up North. Matter of fact, I was splitting firewood for a couple of hours yesterday for our cozy little fire heater...pot bellied stove...whatever it is. It eats wood. That's all Know...if I keep it running all day it'd probably consume a small forest and open up a hole in the Ozone layer over the Gulf Islands. But, I'm enjoying a more spartan lifestyle up here...baking my own bread, soup, and fried rice...anything to fill the stomach. Well, that's all from Mayne tonight.
